For kids who won't sit still: catching floating fish keeps them happily in one spot (we use one)

Your 2 year old is full of ideas now – pouring, filling, "cooking", catching things – and the simple baby toys get boring fast. You want toys that keep them happy in the tub long enough to wash hair, without a pile of moldy squirt toys.
This guide starts with what makes a good bath toy at two, then shows toy types that match how 2 year olds play, what to skip, and safety tips. We're a family in Japan raising two boys and share what works for us.

Two year olds love toys with a clear job: catch, pour, stick, sort, pretend. The best bath toys at this age are:
• Big enough not to fit in the mouth, with no small parts that come off • Easy to clean and dry – no sealed holes that trap water • Open-ended: one toy can be a fishing game today and a tea party tomorrow
Rotate a few toys at a time instead of filling the tub. A small set feels new again each week.
In our home, a simple fishing toy in the tub is a favorite – just floating the fish and catching them keeps our boys busy for a long time.

For little scientists: pour water in and watch the wheel spin – suction-cup sets stay on the wall
For quiet play during hair washing: stick them on the wall and name colors and shapes
For pretend-play fans: "cooking" with water and cups turns bath time into a game
• Bath bombs with small toys inside – the hidden toys can be a choking risk for young toddlers • Squeeze toys with a hole you can't open – water stays inside and gets moldy • Battery toys unless the battery cover is screwed shut • Foam pieces if your child still bites and tears them
After each bath, shake out the water and let toys dry in a mesh bag or basket outside the tub. Throw away anything with black spots or a bad smell. See our guides to bath toy mold (/en/articles/bath-toy-mold/), toddler bath toys (/en/articles/toddler-bath-toys/) and bath toys for 1 year olds (/en/articles/bath-toys-for-1-year-old/).
• Never leave your child alone in the bath, even for a moment – toddlers can drown in very shallow water • Use a non-slip mat; 2 year olds love to stand and climb • Check the water temperature before they get in • Keep adult shampoo, razors and cleaning products out of reach
For a 2 year old, pick a few bath toys with a clear job – fishing, pouring, sticking and pretend play – that are big, simple and easy to dry. Rotate them, keep them clean, and stay right next to your child the whole time.
Yukemuri Quest is a kids’ app: say "Let’s go!" before the bath, and after putting on pajamas, finish and meet a new friend.
