Best bath toys for babies (0-12 months): safe, simple and mold-free picks

Babies don't need much at bath time. A few simple, safe toys can turn a fussy bath into a calm, happy routine.

Here are the best bath toys for babies from newborn to about 12 months, how to keep them clean (no hidden mold), and the safety rules that matter most.

What babies enjoy at each stage

0-3 months: babies mostly need warm water and your voice. A soft washcloth or a floating toy to look at is plenty.

4-6 months: babies start reaching and grabbing. Soft, easy-to-hold toys and floating shapes are perfect.

6-12 months: once babies can sit with support, they love pouring, scooping and splashing. Stacking cups and bath books are big hits.

Our favorite types of baby bath toys

Look for toys made for babies (check the age label), big enough not to be a choking hazard, and easy to clean.

Stacking cups

Pour, scoop and stack. Many have holes that make fun water showers.

Mold-free bath toys (no holes)

Toys without squeeze holes don't trap water, so mold can't grow inside.

Suction cup toys

Stick to the tub wall at baby's eye level. Great for reaching and spinning.

Keep bath toys mold-free

Squeeze toys with a small hole suck in water and can grow black mold inside. If you use them, squeeze out all the water after every bath, or choose toys with no holes or ones that open up for cleaning.

After the bath, rinse toys and dry them in a mesh bag or basket so the water drains away.

Bath safety for babies

Never leave a baby alone in the bath, not even for a second. If the doorbell rings, take the baby out first.

Test the water with your elbow or a thermometer before the baby goes in, and keep baths short so the baby stays warm and comfortable.

Bath seats and rings are not safety devices. Keep a hand on your baby the whole time, and remove small or damaged toys right away.

As your baby grows

Around 1 year old, kids start loving fishing games, bath crayons and toys they can play pretend with. Our kids loved a magnetic fishing toy in the tub, and later dinosaur bath bombs with a toy inside.

Turn bath time into a little adventure

Yukemuri Quest is a kids’ app: say "Let’s go!" before the bath, and after putting on pajamas, finish and meet a new friend.
